In general, once or twice per year. Instruments that are played frequently, used for lessons, or that experience greater seasonal humidity changes may benefit from tuning twice a year or more. For an in-depth answer, see my post How Often Should You Tune Your Piano?
Yes — your piano may need a pitch correction or pitch raise to bring it back to standard pitch and restore its intended voice. I include this at no extra charge, though it does draw from the time available for other improvements.
In most cases, yes. Old pianos can still sound and play beautifully. Occasionally one has deteriorated to the point where it won't hold a tune or needs more work than it's worth — in that case, I'll tell you honestly, and I'm happy to help point you toward something better.
Often, yes. Minor issues — a sticking key, a buzzing string — I'll address on the spot as part of the visit. If it's something more involved, I'll talk you through what I'm seeing, give you a quote, and we can schedule a follow-up.
It's not the playing itself that causes a piano to go out of tune, but rather changes in temperature and humidity, and the settling of the instrument over time. How much a piano is played rarely has a significant impact on its tuning stability.
